The city is renowned for being at the forefront of education reform, with many of its schools receiving national attention for innovative programs. One of its K-8 schools was the first in the state to combine a traditional calendar with the Paidea teaching method, while another received national recognition for the development of an extended school day program. The city also was among the first to offer a community-based public safety model, a centralized command center that integrates police and fire services with city administration.

Historically, the area was heavily agricultural, but following the Civil War, it became a center of industry with an economy that has sustained steady growth since, allowing it to consistently land on Money magazine’s “Best Places for Business and Careers” list. The fighting was fierce, but the battle was inconclusive and Bragg withdrew his forces to Tullahoma, Tennessee.
